A most excellent Christmas

Christmas was excellent this year.

We spent it at home, just the three of us. Fire burning, present opening, Mexican breakfast, Chilean wine, biscuits for the birds, extremely chocolatey Christmas cake, lots of crisps drowned in vinegar (my indulgence), singing, reading in the bath, the best Christmas lunch ever cooked by Daddy while I was in said bath, Call the Midwives Christmas Special on tv...

It was a teeny tiny bit lonely without others, but we were on the phone lots and are seeing everyone over the Christmas period, just not on the day.  I loved it...
Death by chocolate for poor Santa and snowman

On Christmas Eve, we rang Nana Marie, and she was appalled that I had forgotten to mention much about Santa Claus or Rudolph.  I mean, really indignant! That poor poor child, she said, did ye hear that (calling to my sister and nephew Eoin) she didn't even tell that poor child about Santa and Rudolf, I mean it's a disgrace! I had made a half-arsed effort and brought you to see him at the bookshop, but I wasn't sure how to mention the whole coming down the chimney thing...

We read "Twas the Night Before Christmas" anyway in bed and you seemed full of wonder.  Later, Daddy went in to check on you and you were asleep on the chair by the window with the book open on your lap and the curtains pulled aside.  On Christmas Day you said you'd been looking out for Santa and the reindeer. Sweet. I have mixed feelings about Santa, but I do remember the unbelievable excitement when I was a kid, so I guess he can come here. It felt a bit like being behind the curtain, like the Wizard of Oz, leaving out the wine and cake for Santa and the carrot for Rudolf.

You got some lovely presents, all of which you haven't opened yet (we space it out) - big blocks, a handmade light box, puzzles, hair clips etc.

Daddy got some boring practical stuff (big battery recharger anyone?!). In fairness, we are getting ourselves some bikes too when we make it to the shops.

And I got some great CDs and books. Including Women Who Run with Wolves.  Aaaaaaaaaaah oooooooh.  It's going to be a lively ole year!!

Love Mam x

That sounds completely wonderful! It has been a busy year for you, so I'm sure it's nice to end it with extra time together, chocolate, baths, and the like. Good books and good music are wonderful, too! I adore that last photo of the two of you. It looks like such a perfect slice of life. I hope you get some more time to rest during this holiday season and enjoy the time with others.

It was all home births on toilets, and brisk nuns...fab. And I got the best of the Indogo Girls having been reminded by you how much I loved that song Closer to Fine. Turns out it was a collaboration with an Irish band, which was why it was played a lot in Ireland where I'm from. Who knew?!
